Biography

Marie Torre was a New York Herald Tribune television columnist jailed for refusing to identify a confidential source in Judy Garland's defamation suit against CBS. Federal judge Sylvester J. Ryan held her in contempt after she declined to name the CBS executive whose comments she had reported. Torre maintained that revealing the source would violate her professional obligations and argued for protection under the First Amendment. She entered Hudson County Jail in Jersey City on January 5, 1959, and was released on January 14 after serving the reported ten-day sentence, still withholding the name. She later became a pioneering television news anchor at KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh.
