Biography

Sister Marie Nord was a Minnesota Franciscan sister whose ministry was hospitality work for women. The People v. Nord (Colo. 1990) Colorado Supreme Court ruling on the indigency-determination error in her case is named for her.

The March 9, 1983 Nuclear Resister current-prisoner directory places Marie Nord, register 15365-013, in the federal women’s unit at Fort Worth. April 8 was projected release only. The directory does not identify the charge, first physical admission or actual discharge.

Distinct anti-nuclear custody episodes

The original October 18, 1982 newsletter names Nord and Pat Mahoney in the September 7 Rocky Flats arrest and their recognizance release. The November 30 sentencing report gives November 22 sentencing but says they were still free afterward. January 14, 1983 confirms Nord at Fort Worth and register 15365-013; June 6 lists her actually released. Her first sentence-admission day remains unknown. An authorized October 12, 2026 official BOP lookup for the contemporaneously documented register 15365-013 independently returned ANN MARIE NORD, not in BOP custody as of April 8, 1983. This verifies the DAY-precision federal endpoint; it does not prove the end of supervision or other custody and is not assigned to her separate 1985–86 county-jail episodes.

After the September 27, 1985 Martin Marietta action, Nord remained physically confined through transfer on a separate anti-Contra-aid protest warrant, described in December 9, 1985. January 20, 1986 dates her actual release December 16. July 18, 1986 separately documents May 1 sentencing and return to jail, followed by release in late May with earlier custody credited. These are not one uninterrupted jail term.

People v. Nord, 790 P.2d 311 (Colorado 1990), names her Ann Marie Nord, confirms the burglary dismissal and 60-day probation condition, and reverses the earlier appellate judgment with instructions to reinstate the criminal-mischief convictions. No identified, reusable portrait has been verified.

March 1986 conviction after earlier release

The Martin MX report individually names Al Zook, Mary Sprunger-Froese and Marie Nord as found guilty March 5, 1986 of criminal mischief exceeding $300 after a two-day trial before Judge Henry Nieto. Burglary was dropped at the February pretrial hearing. The report explicitly says they were released following the verdict pending an April 28 sentencing date that was still in the future. This is not a new confirmed jail admission or final sentence date; earlier actual custody and separately verified later May proceedings remain distinct. The phrase over a month of earlier detention is not converted to an exact served-day count.

The April 13, 2001 Ruidoso News obituary identifies Sister Marie Nord of the Franciscan Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes in Rochester, Minnesota, and her peace and social-justice ministry in Colorado Springs and Albuquerque. It explicitly dates her birth to July 2, 1945, in Wynnum, Australia, and her death to April 9, 2001, in a car accident north of Roswell. These exact vital dates concern the same Franciscan peace activist; they are not custody endpoints and do not create a death-in-prison or release date. The obituary has no portrait of Nord; the nearby male photograph belongs to a separate eye-care advertisement.

The February 1984 AP account recalls four days in El Paso County Jail after an April 1981 Air Force Academy chapel protest, followed by dismissal.

Cases

Charges: Martin Marietta MX protest: felony criminal mischief; originally charged burglary was dismissed on the prosecutor's motion
Arrested: Sep 27, 1985
Incarcerated: Sep 27, 1985
Released: Dec 16, 1985
Sentence: Initial detention after the September 27, 1985 MX action. Unlike co-defendants released November 1, Nord was transferred to El Paso County Jail on a warrant relating to an earlier June 12 anti-Contra-aid sit-in. That proceeding imposed 60 days plus 15 consecutive days for failure to appear. The January 20, 1986 Nuclear Resister reports her actual physical release December 16, 1985. This endpoint includes custody on the separate protest warrant, not solely the MX prosecution. Exact transfer and separate sentencing days are unknown. The later May 1986 MX sentence is a separate custody episode; unsupported 30-day/one-month totals are removed.
Convicted: Yes
Charges: Felony criminal mischief — Martin Marietta MX Plowshares protest, sentence custody
Sentenced: May 1, 1986
Incarcerated: May 1, 1986
Released: May 1986
Sentence: Sixty days in county jail as a condition of probation, with credit for more than one month of earlier detention. Nuclear Resister July 18, 1986, printed page 13, dates actual sentencing and being led to jail May 1, then actual release in late May. The release value May 1 is only a MONTH-precision storage placeholder, not same-day release. Prior September–December 1985 detention and intervening liberty are not counted as continuous service. The 1988 appellate reversal was itself reversed by the Colorado Supreme Court on April 9, 1990, with instructions to reinstate the convictions; that ruling is not a release date.
Judge: Henry Nieto
Charges: Trespass and forgery of employee passes — September 1982 Rocky Flats anti-nuclear protest
Arrested: Sep 7, 1982
Sentenced: Nov 22, 1982
Released: Apr 8, 1983
Sentence: Five years for forgery, with four and one-half years suspended, plus a $1,000 trespass fine and two years of probation. The October 18, 1982 original newsletter individually identifies the September 7 arrest and subsequent recognizance release. The November 30 report states both women remained free after November 22 sentencing; November 29 was only a surrender order, not verified admission. January 14, 1983 reports Nord actually imprisoned at Fort Worth, register 15365-013, but does not give the first prison-entry day. April 8 was a projected release explicitly unconfirmed in the April 17 issue; June 6 lists her actually released. Authorized official BOP lookup on October 12, 2026 now independently returns ANN MARIE NORD, the same register 15365-013, not in BOP custody as of April 8, 1983. Thus April 8 is now recorded at DAY precision from the official individual record, not inferred from the earlier forecast. It is a federal-custody endpoint, not proof of the end of supervision or other custody. No continuous interval from September arrest or exact six-month actual service is inferred.
Charges: Air Force Academy chapel protest
Arrested: April 1981
Sentence: Four days actually served in El Paso County Jail before charges were dropped.
Convicted: No
