Biography
Marc Scott Emery is a Canadian cannabis-law reform activist and publisher of Cannabis Culture magazine, known as the 'Prince of Pot.' He operated a mail-order marijuana-seed business in Vancouver and used its proceeds to support legalization campaigns. Canadian police arrested him on July 29, 2005, on a U.S. extradition warrant; he was subsequently released on bail. After returning to Canadian custody in May 2010, he was extradited to Seattle on May 20, 2010.
Emery pleaded guilty to conspiracy to manufacture marijuana on May 24, 2010. On September 10, 2010, U.S. District Judge Ricardo S. Martinez sentenced him to five years in prison and four years of supervised release. He served time in several U.S. federal prisons, including Yazoo City, Mississippi. His federal prison sentence ended on July 9, 2014, but he remained detained by U.S. immigration authorities until his return to Canada on August 12, 2014.
His defense argued that the prosecution targeted his legalization advocacy and funding of reform campaigns. Federal prosecutors disputed that characterization and said the case concerned unlawful drug trafficking. The custody dates recorded here cover his continuous U.S. confinement, including the final immigration detention.
