Biography
Specialist James Burmeister was a U.S. Army soldier with the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, who served in Iraq in 2006–07 and afterward refused to redeploy on the grounds that he had witnessed the use of 'bait' tactics by U.S. snipers — leaving items such as detonation cord in roadways to lure Iraqi civilians who could then be shot as supposed insurgents. He went absent without leave to Canada in 2007 and returned voluntarily in 2008. He was court-martialed at Fort Lewis, Washington in May 2008, convicted of desertion, and sentenced to nine months in military confinement plus a bad-conduct discharge.
