Biography

Mangus was an Apache leader captured with his party during the Army’s 1886 campaign. An October 19 report from Fort Apache, reproduced in this Senate document, states that Captain Cooper’s detachment had brought him in. Reports describe his later guarded transport and an attempt to escape from the moving train. On November 6 the commander at Fort Barrancas explicitly reported that Mangus had arrived and was then confined at Fort Pickens, Florida.

Reports describe his later guarded transport and an attempt to escape from the moving train. On November 6 the commander at Fort Barrancas explicitly reported that Mangus had arrived and was then confined at Fort Pickens, Florida. Actual captivity is established by the October 19 report of his arrival at Fort Apache, the October 30 departure report, and the November 6 confirmation of confinement at Fort Pickens. October 19 is the report date, not a proved exact arrest or intake date. The source reports that he was stunned during an escape attempt but quotes a doctor as saying he was not seriously injured. No final release or service total inferred. This is the Mangus captured in 1886, not Mangus Colorado, mentioned elsewhere as killed years earlier.

U.S. Senate Executive Document 117, 49th Congress, second session (March 2, 1887), Surrender of Geronimo, PDF/printed pages 75, 76, 77.
