Biography
Redding Evans was a white farmhand, about thirty-two years old, prosecuted in Jefferson County, Florida, for “slave stealing.” Later Florida execution records identify the enslaved woman as Rose and place Evans’s hanging at Monticello on December 2, 1850. The Espy chronology more broadly classifies the case as aiding a runaway slave. The official summary is sparse, and this profile does not rely on later unsourced retellings for the details of Evans and Rose’s relationship or their attempted flight.
