Biography
Maia Scherrer was a Denver Communist and secretary of the Colorado defense committee. Federal agents arrested her on August 2, 1954, as one of seven Colorado defendants charged under the Smith Act. She was held in the Denver County Jail until posting $5,000 bail. The defendants were convicted, but years of appeals and retrials followed after the Supreme Court narrowed Smith Act prosecutions. Scherrer remained free on bail after a 1959 sentence of two and a half years, and the Tenth Circuit reversed the convictions again in 1961.
