Biography

Louis Rothbaum was arrested at an anti-Hearst open-air meeting at Augus Street and Southern Boulevard in the Bronx on August 13, 1935. Rothbaum was described as a passer-by. On Wednesday, August 21, Magistrate Thomas A. Aurelio sentenced Louis Rothbaum and Jack Louis to two days in jail. The police sergeant testified he broke up the meeting because they were libeling Hearst, whom he called America’s foremost patriot. International Labor Defense attorney Isidore Bassoff appealed. The two days is an imposed sentence, not a measured completed term; the statutory count and physical release remain unprinted.
