Biography
Leon Taback was a New York worker arrested after a delegation from the Allerton Avenue Unemployed Neighborhood Committee sought relief at the Westchester Square Home Relief Bureau. The Daily Worker of May 13, 1933, page 3, reports that he was knocked unconscious and arrested about three weeks earlier, charged with assault, and due for trial June 19. A provisional defense committee called a May 18 conference at the Workers Colony Cooperative, 2700 Bronx Park East. The report does not establish an exact arrest day, conviction, sentence or eventual release.
The May 25, 1933 issue reports a defense conference at Workers Colony Cooperative with fifty-eight delegates representing thirty-one organizations and announces June 6 as the planned trial date. This differs from the June 19 schedule printed in an earlier May report. Both are prospective announcements, with no new completed trial or physical custody endpoint established. The September 6, 1933 Daily Worker prints Tabac/Taback and identifies the first-district Bronx Municipal Court candidate as out on $1,000 bail after a relief-demonstration arrest months earlier on felonious-assault accusations. It schedules a September 8 Special Sessions trial. This adds a later bail and court notice to the existing relief case; months since arrest is not proof of continuous imprisonment, and neither advertised trial date establishes actual discharge. Printed Leon Tabeck, the relief-delegation defendant is announced for trial tomorrow at the Bronx Bergen Building, while Anna Hall’s Brooklyn case was announced for today. June 13 is another prospective trial schedule, alongside the differing June 6 and June 19 notices already preserved. No completed trial, sentence, new arrest or physical discharge is inferred.
