Biography

Leo Reno, also known as Leopold Rheno, was an Austrian-born cook living in Helena. He was jailed and later sentenced to ten to twenty years for antiwar remarks and denunciations of American national symbols. He briefly escaped the county jail in December 1918 but was recaptured the next morning. After imprisonment at Deer Lodge, he was transferred to Warm Springs Hospital and died there on April 23, 1921.

The original Montana State Prison descriptive intake form records actual receipt at Deer Lodge on 1919-01-16 and sentencing on 1919-01-15 in the Lewis and Clark County state sedition case, with an imposed term of ten to twenty years. The report date is distinct from prison admission; receipt is not necessarily initial arrest, and the term is not completed time served. No new physical discharge is inferred. The named form includes frontal and profile photographs. Source: https://clcowgill.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/intakeform-m-w.pdf#page=11

The original Montana State Prison descriptive intake form records the sentence date as 1919-01-15. This sentencing entry is separate from receipt at the penitentiary.
