Biography
Kuwasi Balagoon (born Donald Weems) was a Black liberation-era activist whose politics moved through organizations such as the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. He was arrested and later convicted in connection with the 1981 Brink's armored-car robbery in Nyack—a case that became nationally notorious after multiple deaths during the heist and escape. While imprisoned, he continued to write and became closely associated with prisoner-support networks that viewed him as part of a broader generation of politically committed prisoners from the Black liberation movement. He died in custody in 1986 after developing AIDS-related illness.
A contemporary October 8, 1982 report describes Balagoon asserting self-representation and a New Afrikan political defense at the Brink’s pretrial hearings that opened September 13. 1982 custody start established
The New York State Criminal Justice Institute's November 1985 report, printed page 68, explicitly records the January 20, 1982 capture of Donald Weems (Kuwasi Balagoon) in a Bronx apartment and January 26 arraignment. Balagoon's own trial statement independently identifies Donald Weems as the name used by the prosecution and reports no bail or parole after capture. January 20 is therefore recorded as both arrest and start of detention, including pretrial custody; no separate prison-admission day is inferred. The same report's printed page 72 dates the state verdict September 14, 1983 and seventy-five-years-to-life sentence October 6, 1983. The existing December 13, 1986 endpoint is death in custody, not a release to freedom.
The nongovernmental Special International Tribunal held at Hunter College on December 7–10, 1990, reported testimony about medical neglect of prisoners. Its published verdict states that Kuwasi Balagoon’s AIDS was not diagnosed until ten days before his death. This is the tribunal’s account of the testimony, rather than a finding by an official court.
Breakthrough’s Spring 1982 prisoner correspondence directory names Kuwesi Balagoon with the historical mailing address Box 86, New Hempstead Road, Rockland County Jail, New City, NY 10956. This is a contemporaneous mail-directory reference; it does not establish first physical admission, exact transfer, final release or uninterrupted housing there.
The Spring/Summer 1986 Write Through the Walls directory individually lists Kuwasi Balagoon under historical prisoner number 83-A-6216, with correspondence directed to Auburn Correctional Facility, 135 State Street, Auburn, New York. The original name, individual number and political-prisoner group context match this existing profile. This is dated historical correspondence information, not a present mailing instruction or an independently established admission, transfer, release or completed custody duration.
The report identifies Donald Weems as Kuwasi Balagoon and dates his actual Bronx capture January 20, 1982. It gives a September 14, 1983 verdict and three consecutive twenty-five-years-to-life terms, but dates sentencing October 7 in the narrative and October 6 in its chronology. The discrepancy is retained rather than replacing an established field. The escape appendix also inconsistently dates his earlier Rahway escape September 27 versus May 27, 1973; those references do not establish another completed release.
