Biography

Justin Raymond Colby was a U.S. Army conscientious objector who refused a second Iraq deployment and lived in Canada before voluntarily returning to military custody in July 2012. His March 22, 2013 first-person statement and campaign update document a court-martial sentence of fifteen months, limited to nine months by a pretrial agreement. Actual sentence-service admission is supported in March 2013, but the exact day and completed physical-release date remain unresolved. His original campaign photograph is reproduced with source credit.

Photograph and chronology verified October 12, 2026: The original Courage to Resist article publishes Colby’s March 22, 2013 first-person statement, completed sentencing update and identifiable photograph beside his narrative. The original image was visually inspected and archived unchanged. Credit: Courage to Resist / Justin Colby campaign; photographer unspecified, no open-license claim. His voluntary July 2012 return was followed by continued military duties, so March 22 is not asserted as an arrest. The completed sentencing update supports March 22 sentencing and March admission; exact executed admission day remains under review and is stored at month precision. No completed release evidence supports the legacy December 22 endpoint; it and the derived 275-day total were cleared. The unsupported SOA Watch characterization was removed from the summary.
