Biography

Marshall reports that Joseph Kugler, a farmer and Presbyterian elder, was arrested at Frenchtown, New Jersey on August 16, 1862. An affidavit accused him of statements criticizing the president's troop call and discouraging enlistments. After six days at Mount Holly jail he was sent to the Old Capitol Prison. He was subsequently released without an allegiance oath; the narrative's reference to eight days of detention does not clearly establish the total custody period. Source: John A. Marshall, American Bastile (1869), printed pages 127, https://archive.org/details/americanbastile00marsgoog/page/n140/mode/2up. Marshall is a partisan retrospective source; its allegations are attributed to the author.
