Biography

Joseph Kelly, known as Joe Kelly, was an antiwar activist and Seattle Seven defendant. He was imprisoned for contempt arising from the federal prosecution of organizers of a February 1970 Seattle demonstration.

The prosecution concerned the February 17, 1970 antiwar demonstration in Seattle. Judge George Boldt declared a mistrial and imposed summary contempt sentences. On November 18, 1971, the Ninth Circuit reversed the contempt judgments because the procedure and factual certifications were inadequate. Further contempt proceedings produced reduced sentences; the original conspiracy prosecution ended in 1973. The original sentences do not establish the actual total time served.
