Biography

Joseph Elwell was among those arrested at the May 26, 1934 relief demonstration at 50 Lafayette Street in New York. Elwell, held on a misdemeanor charge and subsequently released on bail, corroborates police violence against Jenkins and D’Amicis. These are the newspaper’s attributed witness accounts. No exact discharge day or complete custody total is established; surname-only defendants are not merged with unrelated same-surname prisoners. Daily Worker, May 31, 1934, page 2. The ILD calls witnesses to his May 26 relief-demonstration arrest and police beating to contact Joseph Tauber and appear at the June 7 hearing at 390 Mulberry Street. The same notice mentions an assault on Mr. and Mrs. Lechay at the Tombs the next day, but does not clearly establish their actual arrest. No new custody episode or hearing outcome is inferred.
