Biography
Joseph Brandt, born Sam Brustein in Poland, was a Spanish Civil War veteran, wartime paratrooper and Ohio Communist Party organizer. Federal agents arrested him in Newark on October 6, 1953 and initially held him under $50,000 bail. A jury convicted him under the Smith Act in February 1956. The Sixth Circuit reversed the conviction on May 23, 1958, and prosecutors dropped the case in August 1959. Archival records state that Brandt spent six months in jail, but exact custody dates have not been located.
