Biography
José Luis Rodríguez was one of four people arrested in the Chicago area on June 29, 1983 in a major FALN case after months of FBI surveillance, in which the government alleged a plot targeting military installations. After a 1985 trial he was convicted of one count of seditious conspiracy (18 U.S.C. § 2384) but — unlike co-defendants Alberto Rodríguez, Edwin Cortés, and Alejandrina Torres, who received 35-year terms — was given a suspended sentence and five years' probation; his conviction was affirmed by the Seventh Circuit in 1986 (United States v. Rodriguez, 803 F.2d 318). At trial he affirmed support for Puerto Rican independence while denying FALN membership. (This identification is based on the Chicago FALN seditious-conspiracy case; the very common name makes certainty difficult.)

The contemporary support booklet Los Imprescindibles, published by Editorial El Coquí and preserved by Freedom Archives, explicitly identifies José Luis Rodríguez in its family-photograph caption. The profile image reproduces the complete upper-right photograph on printed page 34 (PDF page 79): Rodríguez stands behind the chair, with his sister Evette Iris seated. The same booklet includes his own autobiography and speech in the Chicago case, independently distinguishing him from namesake singers and athletes. The published appellate opinion confirms the suspended sentence and five years' probation, but does not establish his individual pretrial custody endpoints. Neither the October 1983 speech nor the October 1986 appellate decision is used as his release date. Existing arrest date is retained; admission, release and actual duration remain unverified. Exact sentencing date documented
Original November 1985 Libertad, printed page 3, dates the Chicago co-defendants' sentencing before Judge George Leighton to October 4, 1985. Its concluding paragraph distinguishes Rodríguez's suspended sentence and five years' probation from the prison terms imposed on the other three defendants. The missing sentencing date is filled with October 4, 1985, at DAY precision, and the judge is identified. Neither that noncustodial disposition nor the later appeal is substituted for an actual prison-release date. Admission, release and actual completed duration remain unverified. Pretrial detention distinct from the suspended sentence
Prisons: Fortresses of Repression, PDF page(s) 5-6: The pamphlet individually names Jose Luis Rodriguez with Alejandrina Torres, Edwin Cortes and Alberto Rodriguez in its account of the 1983 Chicago arrests and describes the four as held under restrictive pretrial conditions and multimillion-dollar bond. The combination of co-defendants distinguishes this from unrelated namesakes. It is evidence of pretrial detention, not service of the later suspended sentence. It gives no individual admission day or actual bail/discharge endpoint; those fields remain unresolved. This is an attributed contemporary advocacy account; its allegations of abuse are not additional judicial findings. The archive filename contains “84,” but the pamphlet includes 1985-1986 events and should not be treated as a document fixed to 1984.
