Biography

Joni Rabinowitz was an Antioch College student and SNCC voter-registration worker in Albany, Georgia. In a contemporary 1963 interview, she described spending 15 days in jail awaiting trial after distributing handbills opposing a bond issue for segregated facilities, and a separate seven days in jail on a vagrancy charge. Both resulted in convictions with suspended sentences. She was subsequently convicted of federal perjury on November 15, 1963 in the Albany civil-rights prosecution; that conviction did not establish continuous custody from her earlier local arrests.
