Biography

John Shea was from St. Maries, Idaho. John Shea received a one- to ten-year prison sentence.

The March 1920 One Big Union Monthly roster, printed as SHEA, JOHN, reports: State . Arrested St. Maries , Idaho , March 16, 1918. Criminal syndicalism . Convicted . Sentenced June 4, 1918 , to from 1 to 10 years . Boise state penitentiary . The roster is a contemporary labor-defense account. Its indictment, bail and imposed-term information is kept distinct from actual admission/release and complete time served; no missing gate date is inferred. White describes Shea’s clemency declaration that he joined the IWW as a labor organization. He reports imprisonment in 1918, release three years later, and death in Portland in 1936 while destitute and using the name Fred Briggs. Prison authorities confirmed the identity but could find no next of kin; the reported age of about sixty-nine is approximate. No exact death or release day is invented.

White’s May 1918 St. Maries mass-trial account reports twelve criminal-syndicalism defendants arriving at Idaho State Penitentiary on June 7, 1918. Note 134 individually names John Shea among these twelve and cites their inmate records. This fills a missing physical prison-arrival day, distinct from verdict and sentencing, without assuming the start of all earlier jail custody or a complete term served.
