Biography

John Murphy was a leader of the Unemployment Councils of the Lower Bronx. The Daily Worker of April 3, 1936 names him among twenty-three workers arrested during a delegation’s visit to a relief bureau the previous day. The workers sought relief for unemployed people. The report does not identify his individual charge or release date.

Page 3 identifies him with Helen Lynch among twelve Lower Bronx Unemployed Council members released August 7 on suspended disorderly-conduct sentences. They were arrested the preceding week during a relief demonstration at Home Relief Bureau officials’ instigation. The matching name, organization and locality identify the existing Lower Bronx organizer; this is a distinct 1935 episode preceding the already recorded April 1936 arrest. The other ten are unnamed and not fabricated. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1935/v12-n189-NAT-aug-08-1935-DW-Q.pdf
