Biography

Page 1’s May 7 Paterson dispatch identifies John Lyding as vice-president of Local 1733, Dyers, United Textile Workers. City police severely beat him that morning while he distributed leaflets at the Emergency Relief station urging unemployed workers to join a Saturday labor rally. They took him, clothes torn, to police headquarters and booked him for disorderly conduct. He was released pending a hearing before a labor delegation appeared half an hour later. The half-hour describes the delegation’s later arrival, not the duration of his custody. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1936/v13-n111-NY-May-08-1936-DW-Q.pdf
