Biography
John Hiza was a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. John Hiza received a seven-year sentence under California's criminal syndicalism law. He was admitted to Folsom State Prison in March 1923 and is documented as still held there in June 1927.
This was a state prosecution. An earlier version of this record carried a federal Espionage or Sedition Act charge; no separate federal prosecution has been found, and that charge is removed.
The International Labor Defense holiday roster in the December 29, 1925 Daily Worker lists this prisoner, printed as John Hiza, at Folsom California. The January 28, 1924 issue of The Daily Worker individually listed John Hiza among the political and class-war prisoners at Folsom State Prison in California, in an appeal to fund newspaper subscriptions for imprisoned people. This is a contemporary custody observation; the publication date does not establish admission, release, or a total period served.
