Biography

Joe Martin was from St. Maries, Idaho. Joe Martin received a one- to ten-year prison sentence.

The March 1920 One Big Union Monthly roster reports: Arrested at St. Maries, Idaho, March 16, 1918, for criminal syndicalism. Convicted and sentenced to one to ten years. Boise state penitentiary; appeal pending. This is contemporary evidence for the established Idaho prosecution and named prison, not a measured complete time served. White reproduces a friend’s clemency appeal reporting Joe Martin’s tuberculosis and serious illness and asking for release so friends could nurse him or at least let him die among them. This reported prison illness and advocacy does not establish a completed release or death.

White’s May 1918 St. Maries mass-trial account reports twelve criminal-syndicalism defendants arriving at Idaho State Penitentiary on June 7, 1918. Note 134 individually names Joe Martin among these twelve and cites their inmate records. This fills a missing physical prison-arrival day, distinct from verdict and sentencing, without assuming the start of all earlier jail custody or a complete term served.
