Biography
Joe Carl, listed as Joseph Carl in the International Labor Defense’s prisoner roster, was jailed after the March 6, 1930 unemployment demonstration in Milwaukee. He received a three-month sentence at the Milwaukee House of Correction. The International Labor Defense provided his wife with a monthly relief allowance during his imprisonment.
The September 8, 1930 Laisve, page 5, reproduces an International Labor Defense directory that names Joseph Carl, lists a three-month term and 1930 in the sentencing-year column, and gives Station F, Box G, Milwaukee, Wisconsin as the correspondence address. The name, Milwaukee setting and three-month term match Joe Carl’s existing record and explicit Joseph Carl alias. The recycled directory supplies no precise intake or discharge date.
