Biography
Jesse Merel Cannon was one of eleven anti-fascist counter-protesters prosecuted after confrontations with supporters of Donald Trump at the January 9, 2021 Patriot March in Pacific Beach, San Diego. Prosecutors used a conspiracy-to-riot theory that defense attorneys and supporters described as an ideologically selective prosecution. Jesse Merel Cannon pleaded guilty to charges arising from the counter-protest and received Two years for the Pacific Beach case plus a consecutive three years for a separate assault case, for a total five-year state-prison term.

The original Pacific Beach indictment, SCD274477, was returned and filed on May 23, 2022, and signed for the prosecution by Deputy District Attorney Makenzie R. Harvey. Its twenty-nine counts were allocated across eleven defendants; they are not all charges against each individual. The September 2023 prosecution opposition supplies procedural history and argues for retaining the indictment, rather than constituting a verdict or a finding that its disputed factual allegations are true.
