Biography
Jerry Wheeler was a participant in the San Francisco-to-Moscow Walk for Peace who left the march to commit civil disobedience at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson, Arizona. Convicted and sentenced to six months, he wrote from the Pima County Jail; no release record proving full service has been found. He later received jail time connected with anti-nuclear actions in California. A December 1960 photograph on the Monterey Peninsula shows him carrying the walk's CNVA sign, its caption noting he "is now serving a six month term in prison".
National Guardian, April 3, 1961: The peace-walk log dates his departure from the march for civil disobedience at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base to the Tucson January 15 entry. His own February 3, 1961 message from Pima County Jail says he was found guilty and sentenced to six months. This gives a dated actual jail-location observation; it does not prove that he completed the entire nominal six-month term or fix his final discharge.
