Biography

Jerry O'Connell, a United States congressman from Montana, was seized and manhandled by Jersey City police during Mayor Frank Hague's suppression of political opposition. The June 7, 1938 New Masses editorial reports that Hague ordered police to expel him from the city, that a hostile crowd shouted threats to kill him, and that police invoked antisemitic and anti-Communist accusations against Hague's opponents. The report establishes coercive police restraint during political activity; it does not establish a formal charge, jail admission, exact day, sentence or completed custody duration. Its word deport refers to expulsion from Jersey City, not removal from the United States. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/new-masses/1938/v27n11-jun-07-1938-NM.pdf#page=11
