Biography

Janie Bugg was a WPA teacher whom an eyewitness letter identifies as beaten and arrested by a police officer while Board of Education WPA employees waited for pay at Borough Hall, Long Island. According to the letter, she objected to being pushed, defended herself against further violence, and was charged with assault. The correspondent linked the confrontation to understaffed wage payment and police control of the workers. A hearing was announced for July 31, 1936; no result, exact arrest date or length of detention is established.
