Identified photograph and custody account

The photograph is reproduced intact from Voluntown Peace Trust's December 1, 2022 article about Jamie Bauer, where it appears as the article's lead image and named social-preview image. The source does not supply a photographer credit or photograph date; neither is invented here. Photograph source.

In Bauer's March 7, 2004 ACT UP Oral History Project interview, printed page 19 (PDF page 20), they describe detention with the Waterloo 54 in a junior-high-school cafeteria, a justice-of-the-peace appearance after several days, and release on recognizance as Jane Does. They recall four or five days before leaving custody. This independently confirms actual detention but supplies no exact admission or discharge day. The contemporary group report now supports an August1983 release month when read alongside this individual account; it does not independently name Bauer at discharge or establish an exact individual release day. Original interview record; Original transcript, printed page 19.

Waterloo custody chronology: individual account and contemporary group report

Bauer identifies themself as one of the Waterloo54 and recalls four or five days of detention before release as a Jane Doe. The original Nuclear Resister, August23,1983, printed page3 describes July30 jail intake and the August3 release of the43 women still detained. Read together, these support July30 custody intake and August1983 release at month precision. The group report does not name Bauer individually at discharge; their recollection of recognizance also differs from its account of eventual dismissal. August3 remains the group endpoint, not an independently verified individual discharge day. August1 in storage is only a month placeholder; no exact-day counter is created. Individual interview, printed page19.

Case

Arrested: Jul 30, 1983
Incarcerated: Jul 30, 1983
Released: August 1983
Sentence: Custody began with the July 30, 1983 Waterloo peace-walk arrest. Bauer recalls approximately four or five days confined before release as a Jane Doe. The contemporary Nuclear Resister August 23, 1983, printed page3, reports the July30 intake and release of the43 still-held women on August3. Together these support an August1983 release month; the report does not name Bauer individually at discharge, and their recollection describes recognizance rather than the report's ultimate dismissal. No exact individual release day or continuous-day total is claimed. August1 is a month-precision storage placeholder, not the actual day.
