Biography

James Martin led a delegation of eleven unemployed workers arrested while seeking relief in New York. The July 14, 1936 Daily Worker reports a disorderly-conduct conviction and sentencing scheduled that morning before Magistrate Anthony Burke. It describes undernourishment, an infected foot and sleeping on cell floors during the heat wave. This is distinct from the California IWW member and Civil War detainee of the same name. The hearing forecast is not a sentence or release; exact endpoints and complete duration are unprinted. Daily Worker, July 14, 1936, original PDF page 3.
