Biography

Page 1 reports shoe-union member William Strauss (headline Straus) shot in the lung and arm by a policeman during an argument with Sam Resnick in Brownsville after a union mass meeting the preceding Thursday. Strauss was critically ill at Kings County Hospital. Five unionists were seized from their beds around 5 a.m. the following morning, interrogated and held at Raymond Street Jail on Magistrate Kozetti's order, with $10,000 bail set for further investigation. The paper says none was at the shooting and alleges a frame-up; Jacques Buitenkant represented the ILD. Bail set does not establish payment or release.
