Biography

Jack Johnstone, national organizer of the Trade Union Educational League, was arrested when police raided the August 1, 1929 antiwar meeting at West Frankfort. The newspaper reports that police broke his right hand in two places and that his other hand was swollen. A Benton dispatch dated August 5 reports his completed release, without supplying the actual gate-release day. These injury allegations are attributed to the newspaper; the interval is not recorded as four completed days.
