Biography

J. Buitenkant was a lawyer for the needle-trades industrial union. On Saturday morning, July 30, 1932, Judge Thomas Aurelio ordered his arrest in Jefferson Market Court after he protested the five-day prison sentence of fur-strike defendant Ben Polack and accused the judge of prejudice. The Daily Worker reports that Buitenkant was detained for two hours and then released, while Polack’s term was reduced to two days. The initial J. is retained without inventing a full given name; no formal charge or separate sentence for the lawyer is printed.
