Biography
Isidore Schneider is individually named in John Howard Lawson’s report among writers and professional workers arrested June 6, 1934 while peacefully picketing the Macaulay publishing offices at 381 Fourth Avenue in support of striking office employees. Police took them to the station; Magistrate Jonah Goldstein demanded an end to picketing, then ordered an immediate trial after they objected. The defense secured unconditional release. The report calls the group eighteen but prints sixteen individual names; no additional names are invented. No statutory charge or measured custody total is stated. The dictionary lists the author as Isidor Schneider, matching the spelling of the contemporary caption already credited here. Born in Horodenko, Poland, on August 25, 1896, he came to the United States in 1902 and attended City College. It records his death in New York City in August 1967, without a day. He was an editor, poet and novelist of working-class themes, active in International Labor Defense, the National Committee in Defence of Political Prisoners, and the American League Against War and Fascism. These are biographical details, not a new detention.
