Biography

Irving Peress was an Army dentist whom Senator Joseph McCarthy made the center of the 1954 “Who promoted Peress?” controversy. Peress invoked the Fifth Amendment when questioned about alleged Communist affiliations. The Army honorably discharged him in February 1954. He was neither criminally prosecuted nor jailed in the episode.
