Biography

Irma Martin was collecting Communist Party ballot signatures in Duluth, Minnesota when an armed gang seized her in West Duluth on Friday, August 29, 1930. The Daily Worker of September 1, page 1, in an August 31 dispatch, reports that her abductors forced her into a car, tied her hands, questioned, threatened and mistreated her, then threw her out about half an hour later. She immediately went to the street meeting where she had been scheduled to speak and described the attack. The newspaper attributes the kidnapping to a steel-company gang. This was extrajudicial confinement, not a conviction or jail sentence, and no state prison admission is inferred.
