Biography

Irene Umeno Harada, born Umeno Tanaka on Kauai, lived on Niihau with her husband Yoshio. JCCH records her arrest several days after the December 7, 1941 Japanese pilot crash and subsequent Niihau incident, in which her husband and the pilot died. The archive says officials ordered her interned for her own protection; it does not establish an individual criminal conviction or guilt in that incident. Listed custody includes Waimea Jail, Wailua County Jail December 1941-February 1942, Sand Island February-March 1942 and Honouliuli March 1943-June 1944. She was paroled June 1944 and released from parole March 1945. The gap between listed Sand Island and Honouliuli intervals is not resolved here.
