Biography

Hugo Gellert was a radical artist and leader of the Anti-Horthy League. Police arrested him on March 23, 1928 while he led a White House picket opposing President Calvin Coolidge’s reception of representatives of Hungary’s authoritarian Horthy government.

The July 1931 contributor note identifies Gellert as an executive member of the newly formed Workers Cultural Federation of the Metropolitan Area and says he was working on a book of one hundred pictures and text based on Marx’s Capital. This records work in progress, not proof that the book had already been completed or published.
