Biography
Joseph Losey was an American film director (The Boy with Green Hair, M, The Prowler) who in 1951 was named before the House Un-American Activities Committee by Edward Dmytryk and Stanley Kramer's collaborator. While in Italy directing Stranger on the Prowl, he was subpoenaed; rather than return to face HUAC, he relocated to the United Kingdom in 1953 and never lived in the United States again. Working in England — initially under pseudonyms — he built one of the most distinguished post-war directorial careers, including The Servant (1963), Accident (1967), and the Cannes-Palme-d'Or-winning The Go-Between (1971). He died in London in 1984.
