Biography
Home Smith was a citrus-union worker jailed after authorities accused union members of responsibility for house fires in Haines City. A worker-correspondent account in the Daily Worker, October 25, 1934, page 4 says he and a fellow union member were held under bond they could not afford, suffered abuse in custody, and were tried at Bartow on October 6, 1934. They were released after fellow workers testified in their defense. The account alleges continued police intimidation after release. It gives no exact arrest day, formal verdict or measurable custody total. The source prints the second worker’s name as Home Smith; that spelling is retained without expansion.
