Biography

Hollie Brown was president of the Charleston City Workers’ Union during the sanitation strike that began July 31, 1972. In an interview reproduced by Washington Area Spark in April 1973, Brown described approximately eight arrests and fourteen charges during the dispute. He individually described accusations of assault on a truck, carrying a rock as a deadly weapon and drunkenness, which he disputed, and alleged that a police officer threatened him with a pistol. The quoted number is approximate and the issue does not date or separate all eight episodes. The strike’s nine months and its July 31 beginning are not assigned as Brown’s continuous jail term or first arrest date.
