Biography
Herbert Simpson was a Portland, Oregon defendant prosecuted for refusing to answer the House Un-American Activities Committee during its 1954 West Coast hearings. He received ten months and a $250 fine. The Ninth Circuit affirmed the judgment, but the Supreme Court reversed it on October 14, 1957 after the solicitor general confessed error. Whether Simpson spent any time in custody before the reversal remains unresolved.
