Biography
Oneida AIM leader and founder of the Milwaukee chapter of the American Indian Movement, imprisoned at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana in the 1970s on weapons-related charges that supporters tied to government targeting of AIM organizers. Documented in PFOC Breakthrough magazine. A Longest Walk declaration reproduced in the Congressional Record on July 27, 1978 identifies Powless as imprisoned at Terre Haute on a conviction for being a felon in possession of firearms. The declaration argues that he had already received a full pardon for the prior state conviction and describes the firearms prosecution as political targeting.
