Biography

Henry Forbes was one of three workers jailed on disorderly-conduct charges during a protest outside Governor Lehman’s Hotel Pennsylvania election meeting. The November 1, 1934 issue reports all three released October 31 into attorney Edward Kuntz’s custody, with a Jefferson Market trial scheduled for November 1. Forbes was a Communist congressional candidate and Downtown Unemployment Council secretary. The article supplies no exact arrest day or complete measured custody length. The November 3, 1934 Daily Worker reports Henry Forbes and Joseph Frost arrested while picketing the Hotel Pennsylvania on Wednesday, October 31, and paroled into their lawyer’s custody on Thursday, November 1. It identifies Forbes as the Communist congressional candidate in the Thirteenth District and secretary of the Downtown Unemployment Council. This conflicts with the November 1 issue’s account of release into Edward Kuntz’s custody on October 31, already recorded here. Neither account is silently preferred, and these reports are not treated as two separate imprisonments. The eight-hour probation-office questioning reported for November 2 is not a measured jail term. The announced Monday sentencing is prospective; no completed sentence or new physical release is established.
