Biography

Marshall describes Dean as a Mount Pleasant, Iowa lawyer and Democratic speaker arrested at Keokuk in May 1863. He reports public threats and insults, fourteen days in a crowded military guardhouse, then parole to a hotel while officials sought an indictment. The narrative records unconditional discharge by Provost Marshal J. M. Hiatt on June 11, 1863 without indictment. Source: John A.
