Biography

Black Hawk was a Sauk war leader who led the 1832 Black Hawk War — the last major armed Indigenous resistance east of the Mississippi — against the forced removal of his band from their ancestral lands in present-day Illinois. Surrendered August 1832; held for eight months at Jefferson Barracks and Fortress Monroe as a U.S. Army prisoner. Released and toured eastern U.S. cities; dictated his autobiography "Life of Ma-ka-tai-me-she-kia-kiak" in 1833 — the first Indigenous autobiography published in the United States.
