Biography

Henderson Watson was one of the Dawson Five, five young Black men arrested in January 1976 on murder charges in Terrell County, Georgia. Contemporary reporting in The Militant described allegations that police obtained confessions by threatening defendants with shooting, castration and execution. Bail was initially set at $100,000 each. Defense supporters raised bail for two defendants, while three remained jailed for eighteen months; the report does not identify which individual defendants served that period. Judge Walter Geer presided over the 1977 proceedings, and defense attorney Millard Farmer challenged the confessions and death penalty. The August 1977 report does not establish the final disposition or individual release dates.

The August 26, 1977 Militant reports January 1976 arrests in the Dawson Five prosecution. It says three defendants remained jailed for eighteen months but does not identify which three; that duration is not assigned individually. It reports that Judge Walter Geer refused dismissal on August 16, set trial for August 29, and that prosecutors abandoned the death penalty. Accounts of threats to obtain confessions are attributed allegations. The Militant, August 26, 1977, volume41number31, original PDF page 3. In September 1977, The Black Panther reported that Judge Leonard Farkas had succeeded Walter Geer in the Dawson Five proceedings. Farkas excluded the disputed confessions because Geer had heard the defense motion but had withdrawn without ruling on it. The report states that he was already free on bond, without giving his release date.
