Biography

Helmut Emig was a naturalized US citizen and steward at Waialae Training School in Honolulu. His March 12, 1942 letter from Camp McCoy said he was arrested at work and had been imprisoned since December 8, 1941. He asked Delegate Samuel W. King to investigate his confinement. A later military message identifies Helmut Parne William Emig under civilian-internee serial HUS-243-CI and states that release ordered October 14, 1943 became effective upon departure from Hawaii, which occurred October 20. The release was conditional on removal to the mainland; it was not the October 14 order date. These documents do not by themselves certify uninterrupted custody throughout every intervening transfer.
