Biography

Harve Estep was a Wayne County member of the West Virginia Unemployed Leagues. The Daily Worker of December 12, 1934, page 3, reports that charges against Estep and three other members were dismissed the preceding week. Their prosecution followed a June 1934 demonstration of about 2,000 unemployed people against spoiled meat distributed by county welfare authorities. An unnamed worker was jailed for demanding sufficient relief and freed after a five-person committee demanded his release. Estep and three others were arrested the following day and charged with treason, inciting to riot and other unspecified offenses. The source does not establish the exact arrest or dismissal dates, a sentence, or the length of Estep's detention. He is not identified as the previously jailed unnamed worker.
