Biography
Haruko Takahashi was a Hawaii-born Shinto priestess who founded the Konko Mission of Wahiawa. Arrested December 14, 1941, she was detained under wartime martial law and imprisoned at Honouliuli. Officials treated her Japan travel and religion as evidence of disloyalty; these were government allegations, not a documented criminal conviction. Denied an attorney, she petitioned for freedom. A review board denied release in March 1944, but she was released in July 1944. She reopened her mission in 1948. Source: https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/haruko-takahashi.htm
